Research Interests
I conceptualize using an Indigenous resurgence methodology (Jobin 2014; Simpson 2011), which draws from the peoplehood model* (Holm, Pearson, and Chavis 2003; Jobin 2013). Cherokee scholar Jeff Corntassel explains that a “peoplehood model provides a useful way of thinking about the nature of everyday resurgence practices both personally and collectively. If one thinks of peoplehood as the interlocking features of language, homeland, ceremonial cycles, and sacred living histories, a disruption to any one of these practices threatens all aspects of everyday life” (Corntassel 2012, 89). Thus resurgent research methods are innovative and focus on assisting Indigenous peoples in rebuilding their communities (socially, culturally and intellectually) as part of the research process while simultaneously meeting their applied governance needs. This is the next phase of decolonizing research in the social sciences.
Research Portfolio
Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Governance (Tier II)
Dr. Shalene Jobin’s Tier II Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Governance focuses on developing innovative research methods for Indigenous resurgence. The research is community-led and aims to meet the governance needs of Indigenous communities, training both students and community partners. The outcomes include an Indigenous resurgence methodology and a land-based research method.
Prairie Indigenous Relationality Network
The Prairie Relationality Network (PRN), established by prairie Indigenous scholars, has been working since 2015 to compile, analyze, protect, and mobilize prairie Indigenous knowledge in areas such as kinship, visiting, treaty relations, and governance. The network has expanded with the Critical Approaches to Indigenous Relationality (CAIR) project, which aims to advance Indigenous-led critical dialogues and…
Indigenous Knowledge Bundles for Community-Based Research Projects
Métis Elder, language holder, and author Maria Campbell urges us to look at concepts in Indigenous languages as bundles that contain a wide array of knowledge that can be applied to current issues. Bundle is a reference to traditional medicine bundles that contain many meaningful and useful items connected to each other. At a gathering…
